UNCONDITIONAL LOVE  AS COMPASSION: BASIS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF CONSCIENCE

theme:  Transcendence of ego or 'self-transcendance' results in the wisdom of mature responsible love with no conditions attached i.e. unconditional love or 'compassion'. Compassion is the capacity to transcend oneself and relate to one's fellow human beings by connecting to their human core...  the emotion of human solidarity...  the acknowledgement of the 'goodness' of a person's humanity... the recognition of a person's wholeness.  Also known as 'universal love',  'productive love', 'spiritual love',  'agape' compassion is required for optimal psychological growth and development of intrinsic spirituality... development of the human 'spirit' ... the spiritual tool for living which is moral consciousness or 'conscience'. Developed conscience is of survival value and the need for compasssionate love is a biological need. Deprivation results in emotional immaturity and the psychological ill health of neurotic growth or 'neurosis'. The result is dysfunctional and  irrational conscience which leads to the negative emotions of fear and hatred which become the source of human wickedness or 'evil'.  Development of the human conscience is a function of the integrated development of personality and character in the context of human empowerment and inner freedom. Education based on the biological need for unconditional love communicates the conditions of security necessary for complete psychological development i.e. whole person education or  'holistic education'

mature love of security  and productive character orientation...

...as affirmation of the goodness of a person's humanity

                                ...as a meta-value...

...as a biological need... or 'metaneed'... necessary condition for development of moral consciousness or 'conscience'...

holistic perception required for effective adaptability

                                ...as an evolutionary force...

...as creativity and productiveness or 'work'

immature love of insecurity as 'selfish love'...

implications for education...

quotations

Love as an emotion of human solidarity and respect for the other's humanity productive love, universal love, spiritual love or unconditional love is an aspect of the mature mind or 'mature love'.  Within the context of maturity, love is the power by which the individual relates to the world through fellow human beings and  at the same time transcends the separateness of individual existence thus retaining  integrity or 'sanity' by uniting with others and becoming part of  something bigger.  Mature love'  is an emotion based on the biological instinct for human solidarity...  an emotion which results from the natural mutual interdependence of all human beings.  Mature love as human solidarity communicates security as  necessary condition for continued interest in the environment and the unfolding of human powers and  human potential i.e. 'humanisation'  in ainstinctive  process of normal psychological growth and development.  Optimal psychological growth and the proper development of human character,  personality, rational thought, confidence, courage and morality of rational conscience depends on the fulfillment of the instinctive biological need (metaneed) for mature love. Mature love of security is relationship with the other's wholeness as a human  being ... their  core of intrinsic human values or 'human core',  their 'humanness',  'humanity',  'humanhood'.  Mature love is granting the  full right to the natural unfolding of human powers ...  granting the right to cultivate one's  own humanity.  Mature love as the  affirmation of another's humanity is  'productive love' which is inseparable from 'labour' meaning 'to cultivate',  to foster growth,  to 'make something grow',  to care for ,  to feel responsible for  in the sense of 'ready to respond'. Mature love is 'responsible love' because it is inseparable from 'care' which implies a profound sense of 'responsibility'  as 'readiness to respond'. To love responsibly means to feel responsible for another's psychological growth and human development. Mature love is based on understanding or 'reason' and in this sense it  does not make any demands  nor depend on any conditions.  With no conditions attached, mature love  is  'unconditional love' and to love unconditionally is to express one's power to lov e ...  to actualise,  to concentrate this power on one person and to relate to their  human core as representing humankind. As the productive form of love, mature love is a force which can create the capacity for good will toward others. In facilitating growth and the cultivation of humanity mature love is a transforming experience which promotes mutual understanding.  Mature love  is  'universal love' because it implies love for all humanity. Mature love combines care with respect and  knowledge and so is genuine ,  wise and unselfish... in contrast to the iimmature love whichc is rresponsible because it is  overprotective, possessive, sentimental and ultimately destructive.  Mature love is 'spiritual love' or 'agape' because it is required for complete spiritual development...  development of moral consciousness or morality of the rational 'conscience' or 'human spirit'.   Mature love is an act of courage, freedom, humility, requiring an intense faith in the individual's instinctive vocation to become more fully human... faith in the 'human personality' or 'human nature'. Manifestation of mature  love depends on knowledge which is shared through dialogue or 'dialogical knowledge'.  Hence the necessity for participatory education... education for human development or 'holistic education'.  Holistic education aims for  optimal psychological growth and development of human productiveness i.e. self-realisation or 'self-actualisation' . The self-actualised individual recognizes his powers, identifies with them and puts them to productive use. The outcome of the productive use of the individual's inherent primary potentialities is the achievement of maturity in the sense of a spontaneous process of mature growth and optimal psychological development as opposed to immature growth, neurotic development or 'neurosis'.

Unconditional love as a value which lies beyond the realm of sense and subjectivity... a 'meta value'. Love is the 'treasure hid in a field' and this field according to the Gita is our own 'soul'...  'subconscious' that part of the mind. The capacity for unconditional love depends on self-realization and transcendence of the ego or 'self-transcendence'.  Ego-transcendence is the natural result of complete psychological and spiritual development which involves development of morality of rational conscience ...involves the synchronization of the conscious mind with the unconscious mind i.e. spiritual emergence   and sanity... Sanity is a function of the motivation to serve others... to transcend the separateness of one's individual existence and unite with others by becoming part of somebody or something bigger than oneself... a person or a community.

Biological basis: Unconditional love is biologically based... The biological need for unconditional love organismic need for solidarity required for optimal psychological development... a 'metaneed' ...  the necessary condition... essential for...  for spiritual growth and development of moral consciousness or  conscience - the human 'spirit'.Development of rational  conscience is a  natural outcome... function of.. optimal psychological development and this includes spiritual development...  mature parental productive love. The development of conscience or development of the 'mind' involves development of awareness of natural knowledge in the unconscious part of the mind... 'subconscious' or 'collective unconscious'  which is common to all humanity and  necessary for survival of the human species as a social species depending on social cooperation for survival. Tthe human need for unconditional love...function of normal psychological growth which is dependent on the human need for unconditional love. ...essential for normal human growth... the insight of moral universality - 'man is a creature of moral law'...  How is it that the unconscious part of the mind possesses all this knowledge? ...human values originate in the genetic makeup of the human species... evolution through natural selection...

Development of the human conscience is based on ...is a function of ...the integrated development of personality and character in the context of inner freedom...  this has implications for education.

The natural result of complete human development is personality integration and the natural holistic perception of reality required for comprehension of one's world.

Truth is reality ...dedication to truth is dedication to reality...a life of total dedication to the truth also means a life of willingness to be personally challenged.... the more clearly we see the world the better equipped we are to deal with the world; the less clearly we see the reality of the world, the more our minds are befuddled by falsehood, misperceptions, and illusions and the less able we will be to determine correct courses of action and make wise decisions. Our view of reality is like a map with which to negotiate the terrain of life. If the map is true and accurate, we will generally know where we are, and if we have decided where we want to go, we will generally know how to get there. If the map is false and inaccurate, we generally will be lost. The process of actively clinging to an outmoded view of reality is the basis for what is referred to by psychiatrists as 'transference'. In a process of transference the worldview which is developed in childhood is inappropriately transferred into the adult environment...

Holistic perception implies an understanding of all perspectives and dimensions and not only those which are of practical  relevance or significance.

The human organism depends for survival on accurate perception of what is real i.e. 'reality'.  Accurate perception of reality depends on mature love and reason... rational conscience...

The productive character experiences the world... understands reality... both mentally and emotionally...  through the intellectual and emotional powers  or  faculties... of 'mature love and understanding or 'reason'.

The human organism ... when fully developed... as productive character ...has a natural faculty for holistic perception which leads to understanding the world...  is able to comprehend reality... understands..comprehends the world both mentally and emotionally, through love and through reason.   The expression of love and reason are two inseparable forms for comprehending the world Although the two powers of emotion and reason are expressed differently, productive love and reason are inseparable forms for comprehending the world... Love is the power of emotion which implies respect, knowledge, care and responsibilty. Reason is the  power of thinking or 'cognition'... The powers of emotion and cognition are expressed in different ways. The power of love combined with the power of reason results in undertanding. Love with knowledge and respect is productive love. Love without knowledge and respect degenerates into possessiveness and domination. 'Reason' is a human faculty for understanding reality. It leads to the comprehension of all conceivable perspectives and dimensions. Intensely interested in a subject  the productive character is affected and stimulated...  inspired emotionally as well as intellectually.  With intense interest in reality, the productive character... human organism is affected and stimulated emotionally as well as intellectually.

With respect he perceives the subject objectively...  perceiving the object simultaneously in its uniqueness and totality Perception is HOLISTIC. holistic perception leads to motivation for productive thinking

.  intellectually and emotionally through the combination of natural  emotional and intellectual...powers of love and reason. The human faculty for understanding reality is based on a combination of love and reason. powers for understanding reality...Comprehension is through both powers. Though they are expressed in different ways, the powers of emotion and cognition are interrelated in a natural process of perception of the whole or 'holistic perception'.   .

With the natural faculty for understanding through love and reason -With respect he perceives the subject objectively in its uniqueness and totality,

The 'productive character orientation' is a mode of relatedness to the world which forms the basis for freedom, for virtue and for happiness. The nature of the productive character is also the nature of  human nature.

one of the greatest problems of human existence is the problem of distinguishing between what we are and what we are not responsible for in this life. ..forever a barrier to the growth and development of the spirit...

...in attempting to avoid the pain of responsibility, we renounce our freedom because freedom implies responsibility ...freedom is painful because being free means accepting one's responsibilities...

survival value of spirituality.... organismic need... Survival of the human species depends on unconditional love because it is the necessary condition for normal psychological growth and development of conscience.. Parental love is ingrained in the mammalian genetic make-up of the human organism. Parental care of progeny is a characteristic of all mammals.

As a social animal, the human organism benefits more from amicable disposition than pugnacious disposition and behavior.

Love is necessary for human survival

Survival value of compassion... compassion for others helps remove fears and insecurities thus giving one the strength to cope with one’s own obstacles....of survival value ... for human solidarity a necessary condition for survival

The organismic need for solidarity results in the mutual interdependence of human beings for optimal psychological development.

Normal human growth and development takes place with the natural unfolding of the organism's humaness and humanity. the organismic need for solidarity required for optimal psychological development. Optimal psychological growth ...proper emotional development ...of the human organism depends on love...

Defined as the evolution of the individual and the evolution of the human spirit...

in the law of love, the more one gives, the more one has.

man finds fulfillment and happiness through love...

"As the essential Being of the world is perceived by the person, so also does he concurrently come closer to his own Being, to his own perfection, of being more perfectly himself." (Maslow Toward a Psychology of Being 95) Improved self-knowledge (and clarity of one's values) is also coincident with improved knowledge of others (and of clarity of their values) and of reality in general. (177)

The power of creative unselfish love ...

unselfish creative love can stop aggressive interindividual and intergroup strife and can transform inimical relationships between persons and groups into amicable ones... love can tangibly influence international relationships and pacify international conflicts. ...a life-giving force, necessary for physical, mental and moral health ...love performs important cognitive and aesthetic functions; love is the heart and soul of freedom and of all moral and religious values;

function of normal psychological growth which is dependent on the human need for unconditional love. ...essential for normal human growth.

Moral science.. Development of morality......spiritual love for survival...

Development of the human conscience is a function of optimal psychological growth, proper emotional development of wholeness of character, personality, rational thought, confidence and courage. .. depends on instinctive biological need for unconditional love...

undeveloped conscience is result of deprivation of unconditional love which communicates security necessary for normal human growth and interest in the environment...  ('unconscious')... deprivation of unconditional love results in undeveloped conscience...

selfishness is not identical with self-love... on the contrary, selfishness and self-love, far from being identical are actually opposites... selfishness is caused by the very lack of self-love.

Love is an evolutionary force  There is an important connection between, love and human growth... human development...  genuine love is the will to extend oneself for spiritual growth ...a form of work or courage directed toward nurturing one's own or another's spiritual growth. Nurturing the spiritual growth of others ..paying attention to another's spiritual growth has the effect of nurturng one's own spiritual growth. Love is dedication to one's own development as well as the development of others, love is dedication to the human race and to human spiritual development ...the more loving one is, the more humble one is... love is the source of power...Hindu gurus make no bones of the fact that their love is the source of their power... when we grow, it is because we are working at it, and we are working at it because we love ourselves... it is through love that we elevate ourselves...and it is through love of others that we assist others to elevate themselves...

love is an act of evolution... an evolutionary force... the extraordinary wisdom of the unconscious is an ultimately explainable part of a molecular brain operating with miraculous technology... spiritual growth is the evolution of an individual... human organism as it grows depends on parental love for spiritual growth necessary for survival... the human species depends on love for survival... survival value of love in the evolution of homo sapiens as a social organism which depends for survival on its ability to cooperate with other members of its own species the capacity for awareness is in that part of the mind called the 'conscious' from Latin 'con' meaning with and 'scire' meaning to know.. the mind's consciousness... or 'conscience'.

the process of constant self-examination and contemplation is essential for ultimate survival.....the only way that we can be certain that our map of reality is valid is to expose it to the criticism of others... means leading a life of total honesty... to assure that our communication reflects accurately reality as we know it...being open... continually grow...through openness one can establish and maintain intimate relationships... openness is a source of illumination and clarification...total freedom to be...by their openness, people dedicated to the truth live in the open, and through the exercise of their courage to live in the open, they become free from fear.. to be free we must assume complete responsibility for ourselves, but in doing so we must possess the capacity to reject responsibility that is not truly ours...

growth of the human spirit involves giving up the self  the human being finds lasting joy of life...

the spiritually evolved person is an extraordinarily loving person and with extraordinary love comes extraordinary joy...extraordinarily competent...to serve ...people of great power...they suffer dreadfully...spiritual evolution to a life of higher consciousness means more suffering but more joy... discipline is the means of human spiritual evolution..the force behind discipline is love...exercise attention by listening...

'Living' as an art is the process of developing into that which one is potentially.

Productive love promotes growth and understanding.

Human Development: Valuing Process (Science of Values) human values originate in the genetic makeup of the human species. Parental love is ingrained in the mammalian genetic make-up of the human organism. Parental care of progeny is a characteristic of all mammals. As a social animal, the human organism benefits more from amicable disposition than pugnacious disposition and behavior.

" Intensely interested in a subject, an individual is affected emotionally and intellectually stimulated. With respect he perceives the subject objectively in its uniqueness and totality, and is motivated to think about it productively. Known as self-realization or self-actualization, human fulfillment as ethical and productive living is the result o natural process of psychological human development and the development of the human 'conscience' meaning knowledge within oneself (from, Latin 'conscientia') As a reaction of the whole person to its functioning, the human conscience has a strong influence on the affective (emotional) as well as intellectiual (reason) components of the peronality.

"Actions, thoughts, and feelings which are conducive to the integration of our whole personality produce a feeling of inner approval, of 'rightness' characteristic of the 'good conscience'. On the other hand, acts, thoughts, and feelings injurious to our total personality produce a feeling of uneasiness and discomfort, characteristic of the 'guilty conscience.' "Conscience is thus a re-action of ourselves to ourselves. It is the voice of our true selves. which summons us back to ourselves, to live productively, to become what we potentially are. It is the guardian of our integrity...of our love for ourselves." (159) The human conscience is a natural expression of a biologically based interest in the properly integrated functioning of the whole personality. The human conscience is the guardian of man's true self-interest and integrity.

'Immature love' is selfish love... based on insecurity The experience of 'love' as possession of another is a form of immature will to cling to the role of dependent and to create security for oneself in a world which is perceived as threatening and dangerous. Hatred and fear result from emotional immaturity and psychological ill health. Immature love without knowledge and respect can degenerate into domination, possessiveneness, and ultimately destructiveness. Immature love as possession creates no capacity for good will toward the many.

Immature love is  destructive because it can degenerate into domination and possessiveness.

Love is NOT protective and overprotective and sentimental so-called 'love'.  Love is a transforming experience which creates a capacity for good will toward others. "Whenever we experience a genuine love, we are moved by this transforming experience toward a capactity for good will. Or we might put the matter inversely: if what we call love in relation to one person or to a few people creates in us no capacity for good will toward many, then we may doubt that we have actually experienced love. In all likelihood, what we have experienced is some form of immature will to make security for ourselves in a dangerous world by clinging to the role of dependent." (Erich Fromm Man For Himself) or (Overstreet The Mature Mind)

Unconditional love is an essential for the child's normal development, and when this is refused, the environment comes to be dreaded... - it is perceived as a menace to his individuality, his development, his instinctive strivings to grow, his freedom and his happiness... The fear is grounded in reality...In an environment in which the basic anxiety develops, the child's free use of energies is thwarted, his self-esteem and self-reliance are undermined, fear is instilled by intimidation and isolation, his expansiveness is warped through brutality or overprotective 'love'.

NEED FOR UNCONDITIONAL LOVE ...FOR OPTIMAL PSYCHOLOGICAL GROWTH...FOR DEVELOPMENT OF intrinsic spirituality or 'CONSCIENCE'.

The difference in expression depends on knowledge and respect.

It is not enough to have more, or even to know more, but to live more, and if we want to live more, we must love more.

Implications for education: Meaningful education as provision of conditions of freedom and security of unconditional love necessary for complete human development.

Education for development of conscience is based on  the instinctive biological need for unconditional love as affirmation of the person's wholeness... their humanity... their potential for self-actualisation which is the basis for freedom, for virtue and for happiness.

"Love is the loftiest educational force for enlightenment and moral ennoblement of mankind" (Pitirim Sorokin);

Natural aspect of human adaptive behaviour is the ability... capacity... for creativity and productiveness or  'work'... the driving force behind it is intrinsic motivation

... is closely related to... interrelated with... personality development.

Work is the medium for oneness with  the environment... work is the medium through which the individual grows in connection with the environment... grows to psychological maturity and fulfillment of human potentiality and achievement of happiness which is integration with oneself and one's environment. The recognition of the psychological value of work in human psychological development is the basis for the organization of holistic education.

Proper emotional development ... Optimal psychological growth depends on unconditional love... proper development of the human character, personality and conscience... development of 'humaness' and wholeness depends on fulfillment of the instinctive biological need for unconditional love .

self-discipline of children comes from their concentration on work...

Optimal psychological growth of the human organism depends on love conducive to normal development.

evolution of the human spirit or 'conscience'..

(scientific method as maturity)

The organismic need for solidarity results in the mutual interdependence of human beings for optimal psychological development.

The human emotion of solidarity with other human beings is a necessary condition for growth of the individual. Normal human growth and development takes place with the natural unfolding of the organism's human powers - the organism's 'humanness' and 'humanity' - the organism's 'wholeness'. Affirmation of the natural unfolding of human powers - the human emotion of solidarity - is 'love'. Love is the recognition of a person's wholeness - of a person's humanity. Optimal psychological growth of the human organism depends on love conducive to normal development.

For the human organism, human solidarity is a necessary condition for survival and for normal psychological growth.

development of the conscience, is a natural outcome of normal human development - development of the 'mind'.  evelopment of morality and the human conscience depends on unconditional productive love.

death provides life with meaning...this is the central wisdom of religion...

"A major and essential task in the process of one's spiritual development is the continuous work of bringing one's conscious self-concept into progressively greater congruence with reality"

   a life-giving force, necessary for physical, mental and moral health ... love performs important cognitive and aesthetic functions; love is the heart and soul of freedom and of all moral and religious values;

Concept of 'original sin'... young child is cursed because Adam and Eve ate of the tree of knowledge!!!knowledge of good and evil

 Quotations:

"The doctrine that love for oneself is identical with 'selfishness' and an alternative to love for others has pervaded theology, philosophy and popular thought; the same doctrine has been rationalized in scientific language in Freud's theory of narcissism....  Is (modern man's) selfishness identical with self-love or is it not caused by the very lack of it? ...Selfishness and self-love, far from being identical are actually opposites selfishness is not identical with self-love...on the contrary, selfishness is caused by the very lack of self-love....selfish persons are incapable of loving others, but they are not capable of loving themselves either. Erich Fromm, Man for Himself p. 129-131)

"To love a person productively means to relate to his human core, to him as representing mankind. To love is an expression of one's power to love and to love somebody is the actualization and concentration of this power with regard to one person."  (Fromm Man for Himself ).

"Love is an act of courage, an act of freedom, an act of humility, an act of dialogue-(dialogical) requiring an intense faith in man... faith in his vocation to be more fully human" (P. Freire. Pedagogy of the Oppressed page 79)

"An emotion resulting from the natural mutual interdependence of human beings, love represents human solidarity which is a necessary condition for the unfolding of each individual's human powers and humaness. Love without 'respect' and knowledge can degenerate into domination and possessiveness. 'Reason' as a human faculty for understanding reality is the comprehension of all conceivable perspectives and dimensions, and not only those which are of practical relevance." (Fromm Man For Himself l29). "Love is the power by which the individual human being relates to the world through his fellow man." (Fromm Man For Himself)

"One does not truly love a person and yet seek to enslave him- by law or by bonds of dependence and possessiveness" Unconditional love is not sentimental.

"Man's value judgements - his criteria for good and evil - are derived from the meaningfulness of his own existence. Man finds fulfillment and happiness through love - the power by which he relates to the world through his fellow man. (Fromm Man For Himself 18)

"To know, to love, and to serve is the trinomial of all religions, but the child is the true maker of our spirituality. He teaches us the plan of nature for giving form to our conduct and character, a plan fully traced out in all its details of age and work, with its need for freedom and intense activity in accordance with the laws of life. What matters is not physics, or botany, or works of the hand, but the will, and the components of the human spirit which construct themselves by work. The child is the spiritual builder of mankind, and obstacles to his free development are the stones in the wall by which the soul of man has become imprisoned." (Maria Montessori The Absorbent Mind 221)

"Conscience is a reaction of ourselves to ourselves. "The development of conscience is based on unconditional love, an emotion which results from the natural interdependence of human beings. Unconditional love is necessary for the proper development of conscience. Conscience is the 'guardian of integrity' and necessary for self-preservation. Unconditional loce - love as a meta value - is inseparable from labor and reason...  Man comprehends the world, mentally and emotionally, through love and through reason." (Fromm Man for Himself An Inquiry into the Psychology of Ethics 97)

"Although the expression of the two different powers of emotion and thinking, 'love' and reason are two inseparable forms for comprehending the world. 'Love' meaning 'productive love,' is inseparable from 'labor' meaning 'to cultivate' or 'make something grow.' 'Love' in this sense is unconditional and cannot be divorced from care and 'responsibility' meaning 'to be ready to respond.' To love productively means to care and feel responsible for another's growth and human development. "To love one person productively means to be related to his human core, to him as representing mankind." (Fromm Man for Himself 101)"

Love is the power to transform the world "Humble love is the most effective force, the most terrific, the most powerful, unequaled by any other force in the world." (Fyodor Dostoievsky cited by Sorokin).

Love is an emotion which results from the natural interdependence of human beings. "Unselfish and wise love is a life-giving force, necessary for physical, mental and moral health; ...love is the loftiest educational force for the enlightenment and moral ennoblement of mankind; love performs important cognitive and aesthetic functions; love is the heart and soul of freedom and of all moral and religious values;..."  "Man's sanity depends on man's ability to unite with other human beings. By submission to a person, group, institution, etc. transcends the separateness of his individual existence by becoming part of somebiody or something bigger than himself. The only passion which satisfies the need to unite and achieve integrity at the same time is love. Love is union with somebody, or something, outside of oneself, under the condition of retaining te separateness and integrity of one's own self." (Erich Fromm "Values, Psychology, and Human Existence"In Maslow A.H. (ed) New Knowledge in Human Values. New York: Harper, 1959. 153

"In keeping with a good deal of current literature, the term 'love' might best be reserved for the attitude shown by the parents of the 'rational-altruistic' children. They showed a warm affection but at the same time they demonstrated a realistic awareness of what a given child really needed most at a given time. ...They gave the children many chances to develop their individuality in age-appropriate ways....They wanted their children to grow and be happy in their own ways. ...parental control which was consistent and trustful...produced mature, self-disciplined adolescents." Insight of Christ for universal love as universal brotherhood: "A new commandment I give unto you that ye love one another." "Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you." This was the most profound insight into human nature - man's social nature. The findings of Psychiatry and Psychology have shown that sound psychological health is measured by the degree to which people relate to other people. Hatred and fear result from emotional immaturity and psychological ill health.(Erich Fromm)

"In some respects, the most audacious of all the great insights that have come into the world was the apparently absurd conviction of Jesus of Nazareth that men must love one another. 'A new commandment I give unto you that ye love one another.' A commandment for universal love. The love of a person implies not the possession of that person but the affirmation of that person. It means granting him gladly the full right to his unique humanhood. One does not truly love a person and yet seek to enslave him - by law or by bonds of dependence and possessiveness." (H.A. Overstreet, The Mature Mind, W.W. Norton & Co. Inc. New York 1954)

"Anxiety feelings arise in children whose parents fail to give them genuine warmth and affection (ususally because of their own neuroses). "Love is affirmation of the other person not possession of the other person. Love is granting the other person the full right to his own humanhood.  Man finds fulfillment and happiness through love - the power by which he relates to the world through his fellow man. 'Living' as an art is the process of developing into that which one is potentially.

Not sentimental, love is an act of courage, an act of freedom, an act of humility, an act of dialogue-(dialogical) requiring an intense faith in man -"faith in his vocation to be more fully human" (Paulo Freire. Pedagogy of the Oppressed. 79)

Love is affirmation of the other person not possession of the other person. Love is granting the other person the full right to his own humanhood.

"Whenever we experience a genuine love, we are moved by this transforming experience toward a capactity for good will. Or we might put the matter inversely: if what we call love in relation to one person or to a few people creates in us no capacity for good will toward many, then we may doubt that we have actually experienced love. In all likelihood, what we have experienced is some form of immature will to make security for ourselves in a dangerous world by clinging to the role of dependent." Fromm

LOVE IS AN EVOLUTIONARY FORCE: CONNECTION BETWEEN LOVE AND HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT There is a connection between love and growth... genuine love is the will to extend oneself for spiritual growth ...a form of work or courage directed toward nurturing one's own or another's spiritual growth. Nurturing the spiritual growth of others ..paying attention to another's spiritual growth has the effect of nurturing one's own spiritual growth. Love is dedication to one's own development as well as the development of others, love is dedication to the human race and to human spiritual development ...the more loving one is, the more humble one is... love is the source of power...Hindu gurus makes no bones of the fact that their love is the source of their power... when we grow, it is because we are working at it, and we are working at it because we love ourselves...it is through love that we elevate ourselves...and it is through love of others that we assist others to elevate themselves...love is an act of evolution... an evolutionary force... the extraordinary wisdom of the unconscious is an ultimately explainable part of a molecular brain operating with miraculous technology...spiritual growth is the evolution of an individual... human organism as it grows depends on parental love for spiritual growth necessary for survival...the human species depends on love for survival... survival value of love in the evolution of homo sapiens as a social organism which depends for survival on its ability to cooperate with other members of its own species the capacity for awareness is in that part of the mind called the 'conscious' from Latin 'con' meaning with and 'scire' meaning to know..the mind's consciousness... or 'conscience'.

The aim of human growth is the self-realisation of human productiveness... a mode of relatedness to the world. i.e. 'productive character orientation'.

PRODUCTIVE CHARACTER ORIENTATION The outcome of the productive use of the individual's inherent primary potentialities is the achievement of maturity i.e. 'self-realisation' or 'self-actualisation'. Self-actualisation results in the 'productive character orientation'. The productive character orientation results from a spontaneous process of self-realization. The productive character experiences the world ... comprehends the world... through the intellectual and emotional powers of 'love' as mature love or 'productive love'.... and mentally through understanding or 'reason'... The emotional power of'love' implies respect, knowledge, care and responsibilty.

The power of thinking or 'cognition' or 'reason' implies an understanding of all dimensions.  Reason is the human faculty for understanding reality ...the comprehension of all conceivable perspectives and dimensions, and not only those which are of practical relevance...

Productive love is an emotional power which satisfies the need to relate to the world through one's fellow human beings and at the same time transcend the separateness of one's individual existence and retain integrity i.e. 'sanity'. Sanity is a function of the motivation to serve others... to unite with others and become part of somebody or something bigger than oneself... a person or a group of people.

To love productively is to relate to a person's human core ... to relate to the person as representing humankind. (Fromm Man for Himself 101). Productive love is inseparable from labor and reason. "Man comprehends the world, mentally and emotionally, through love and through reason." (Fromm Man for Himself 97)

Productive love is an act of courage, freedom, humility, requiring an intense faith in the 'human personality' or 'human nature' ... faith in the individual's vocation to become more fully human... depends on knowledge which is shared through dialogue i.e. 'dialogical knowledge'. Productive love is unconditional love ...a value which lies beyond the realm of sense and subjectivity... a 'meta value' or 'metaneed'.

Though they are expressed in different ways, the powers of emotion and cognition are interrelated in a natural process of perception of the whole or 'holistic perception'.

HOLISTIC PERCEPTION Comprehension of reality understanding the world depends on natural wholistic perception. The productive character is intensely interested in a subject and inspired emotionally as well as intellectually. With respect he perceives the subject objectively i.e. with  Wholistic perception is the simultaneous perception of the object in its uniqueness and totality... leads to motivation for productive thinking.

The human organism has a natural faculty for holistic perception which leads to understanding through love and reason. The human organism is able to understand the world ...comprehend all conceivable perspectives and dimensions, and not only those which are of practical significance to itself... through the natural powers of love and reason... intellectually and emotionally through the natural intellectual and emotional powers which are inseparable... Comprehension is through both powers. The power of love combined with the power of reason results in understanding. Love is a power of emotion. Reason is a power of thinking...cognition.

Productive character orientation is the basis for freedom, for virtue and for happiness.

The self-realized individual recognizes his powers, identifies with them and puts them to productive use. The nature of the productive character is the nature of the human organism or 'human nature'.

"Man comprehends the world, mentally and emotionally, through love and through reason."(Fromm Man for Himself 97)

Love is the power of emotion...Reason is the power of thinking or 'cognition'...comprehension through both powers... the power of emotion is 'love' which implies respect, knowledge, care and responsibilty.. The human faculty for understanding reality is based on a combination of love and reason. ..The human organism understands the world through the natural powers of love and reason..the expression of the two different powers of emotion and thinking

Although the expression of the two different powers of emotion and thinking, 'love' and reason are two inseparable forms for comprehending the world. 'Love' meaning 'productive love,' is inseparable from 'labor' meaning 'to cultivate' or 'make something grow.' or 'cultivate'.'Love' in this sense is unconditional and cannot be divorced from care as 'readiness to respond' or 'responsibility'and 'responsibility'  To love productively means to care and feel responsible for another's growth and human development. To love productively means to care and feel responsible for another's growth and human development. To love a person productively means to be related to their human core, to them as representing humankind. "To love one person productively means to be related to his human core, to him as representing mankind."(Fromm Man for Himself 101)"

Love is an emotion which results from the natural mutual interdependence of human beings. Love represents human solidarity which is a necessary condition for the unfolding of the individual's human powers and humaness... "An emotion resulting from the natural mutual interdependence of human beings, love represents human solidarity which is a necessary condition for the unfolding of each individual's human powers and humaness. Love without 'respect' and knowledge can degenerate into domination and possessiveness. (Fromm Man For Himself l29).

Productive love promotes growth and understanding.

Love without 'respect'and knowledge can degenerate into domination and possessiveness. 'Reason' as a human faculty for understanding reality is the comprehension of all conceivable perspectives and dimensions, and not only those which are of practical relevance.

The human organism depends for survival on accurate perception of what is real i.e. 'reality'.

"It is not enough to have more, or even to know more, but to live more, and if we want to live more, we must love more. Love is the 'treasure hid in a field' and this field is our own 'soul'... in the law of love, the more one gives, the more one has."

Love is a power with  which one perceives the world. Love is the capacity to transcend oneself and relate to one's fellow human beings by connecting to their human oore.To love another is to express the power to love and to concentrate this power on the one person as representing humankind. Love of another's humanity is 'universal love'. Universal  love is the love for all humanity. Universal love is a productive force because it creates the capacity for good will. Good will promotes the understanding of other human beings and the cultivation of their humanity. Universal love is 'productive love'. Productive love cannot be separated from understanding or 'reason' and cultivation or 'labour'. To love productively is to care for the  other person's growth and development and to feel responsible in the sense of 'ready to respond'. The productive form of love is inseparable from 'labor' meaning 'to cultivate', to foster growth."To love one person productively means to be related to his human core, to him as representing mankind." (Fromm Man for Himself 101)" .Productive love is 'responsible love'. Responsible love does not make any demands nor depend on any conditions. Responsible love is 'unconditional love'.Unconditional love is affirmation of the other and grants them the full right to cultivate their own humanity. For this reason love is the power to transform the world.

Love is the power by which the human individual relates to the world through fellow human beings... finds fulfillment and happiness through love (Fromm Man For Himself)

LOVE AS A "META VALUE" is inseparable from labor and reason

'Love' in the sense of productive love is unconditional. No conditions are attached to productive love. Unconditional love is productive love with no conditions attached. Unconditional love is not sentimental.

link between intrinsic motivation and work: Intrinsic motivation is the driving force behind that natural aspect of human adaptive behaviour which is the ability to 'work'. The capacity for workis closely related to personality development. The development of the personality is closely related to the ability to work which is a natural aspect of human behaviour. The ability to work is interrelated with the development of the personality. link between personality and work Work is the medium for oneness with the environment, the human being can grow to psychological maturity and fulfill his human potential and achieve happiness- integration with himself and his environment... work is the medium through which the individual grows in connection with the environment... grows to psychological maturity and fulfillment of human potentiality and achievement of happiness which is integration with oneself and one's environment. Mature productive love is affirmation of the other person's humanhood. Mature love is a transforming experience toward a capacity for good will. The experience of genuine love as affirmation of another's humanity is a transforming experience which creates a capacity for good will toward others.

Normal human growth and development takes place with the natural unfolding of the organism's human powers - the organism's 'humanness' and 'humanity' - the organism's 'wholeness'. Mature love is the affirmation of a person's humanhood... granting the full right to a person's unique humanhood. Affirmation of the natural unfolding of human powers - the human emotion of solidarity - is 'love'. Love is the recognition of a person's wholeness - of a person's humanity. Love implies affirmation, not possession. Love is affirmation of the other person not possession of the other person. One does not truly love a person and yet seek to enslave him - by law or by bonds of dependence and possessiveness. The natural result of complete human development is personality integration and the wholistic perception of reality. The aim of human development is the individual's self-realization of his productive character, experiencing the world both mentally through reason and emotionally through love. 'Love' implies respect, knowledge, care and responsibilty. 'Reason' implies an understanding of all dimensions. Knowledge of the productive character orientation is also knowledge of human nature. Development of the human conscience is based on ...is a function of ...the human need for unconditional love...function of normal psychological growth which is dependent on the human need for unconditional love. ...essential for normal human growth. Unconditonal love is a biological need necessary for the development of the human 'conscience'. Development of morality and the human conscience depends on unconditional love. 'unconditional productive love' is an emotion which results from the natural interdependence of individuals of the human species. Proper development of the human character, personality and conscience - development of 'humaness' and wholeness depends on the human organism's instinctive biological need for unconditional love - mature love, love with respect, knowledge and responsibility, responsible parental love as opposed to protective and overprotective 'love'. Proper emotional development depends on love. Love is a necessary factor for the proper development of rational thought, confidence and courage.

... ..the unconscious part of the mind which possesses the natural knowledge of the organism...intuition?? conscience...the 'collective unconscious'...that part of the mind which is common to all humanity... in the law of love, the more one gives, the more one has. ...self-discipline of children comes from their concentration on work... spiritual growth is the development of consciousness and conscience... the development of consciousness is the development of awareness of natural knowledge which is in unconscious mind, the 'subconscious'... involves the synchronization of the conscious mind with the unconscious mind... how is it that the unconscious part of the mind possesses all this knowledge? ...necessary for survival of the human species as a social organism depending on social cooperation for survival... Defined as the evolution of the individual and the evolution of the human spirit... one of the greatest problems of human existence is the problem of distinguishing between what we are and what we are not responsible for in this life. ..forever a barrier to the growth and development of the spirit...

...in attempting to avoid the pain of responsibility, we renounce our freedom because freedom implies responsibility ...freedom is painful because being free means accepting one's responsibilities...

truth is reality ...dedication to truth is dedication to reality...a life of total dedication to the truth also means a life of willingness to be personally challenged....the more clearly we see the world the better equipped we are to deal with the world, the less clearly we see the reality of the world, the more our minds are befuddled by falsehood, mispercetions, and illusions and the less able we will be to determine correct courses of action and make wise decisions. Our view of reality is like a map with which to negotiate the terrain of life. If the map is true and accurate, we will generally know where we are, and if we have decided where we want to go, we will generally know how to get there. If the map is false and inaccurate, we generally will be lost. The process of active clinging to an outmoded view of reality is the basis for much mental illness...referred to by psychiatrists as 'transference'. worldview developed in childhood which is inappropriately transferred into the adult environment... the process of constant self-examination and contemplation is essential for ultimate survival.....the only way that we can be certain that our map of reality is valid is to expose it to the criticism of others... means leading a life of total honesty... to assure that our communication reflects accurately reality as we know it...being open... continually grow...through openness one can establish and maintain intimate relationships...openness is a source of illumination and clarification...total freedom to be...by their openess, people dedicated to the truth live in the open, and through the exercise of their courage to live in the open, they become free from fear.. to be free people we must assume complete responsibility for ourselves, but in doing so we must possess the capacity to reject responsibility that is not truly ours... growth of the human spirit involves giving up the self (related to love) the human being finds lasting joy of life...

death provides life with meaning...this is the central wisdom of religion... the spiritually evolved person is an extraordinarily loving person and with extraordinary love comes extraordinary joy...extraordinarily competence to serve ...people of great power...they suffer dreadfully...spiritual evolution to a life of higher consciousness means more suffering but more joy... discipline is the means of human spiritual evolution..the force behind discipline is love...exercise attention by listening... "A major and essential task in the process of one's spiritual development is the continuous work of bringing one's conscious self-concept into progressively greater congruence with reality"

Concept of 'original sin'... young child is cursed because Adam and Eve ate lof the tree oif knowledge!!!
